Loxdox, Oatober 24. Mr Gladstone declines to express an opinion 011 the question of eight hours until 110 has had an opportunity of perusing the Bill, but implies that he approves of the eight hours' system so f «-as miners itre concerned. He considers it a mistake for the labour party to have too frequent recourse to Parliament for redress of tlicir grievances.
Sir Gavan Duffy, in a letter to Archbishop Croke, declares if the Land Purchase Bill, introduced into the British Parliament by Mr Balfour, whs subunttted to an Irish Parliament it would be received with an outburst of enthusiasm, and he advises its prompt acceptance by the Irish Party.
The directors of the St. Katharine Docks have determined to prevent unions supervising the tickets of unionists, if any of the latter are employed after November 4. the date on which the company have intimated their intention of employing free labour. It is probable that the directors of other dock companies will follow their example with regard to the employment of labour. Owing to the coal owners refusing to grant an advance of 15 per cent, on the wages of colliers, at Fife, the Kingross miners threaten to go out on strike. Bi:m,ix, October 23. The irritation caused in Germany at the passing of the McKinlcy Tariff Bill in America is increasing, and it is hoped that England will co-operatc to adopt a policy of retaliation. Zanzibar, October 24. The Sultan of Witu refuses to surrender to the British authorities the I murderers of several Germans, and it is believed that military operations against liim are inevitable.
