Cardinal Mornn has written to the loaders, asking them to suspend the strike in order to afford an opportunity of legislation in the matter. A section of tlio wharf labourers waited to-day 011 tlie vice-president of the Employers' Association, to ascertain definitely 011 what terms they would lie allowed to return to work, in tlie event of tlieir wishing to do so apart from the leaders. A reply was given that freedom of contract would he strictly adhered to. The question was considered by the Wharf Labourers Association, when it was resolved not to accept.freedom of contract; but it is understood, however, that a large section of the men will apply for reinstatement 011 Monday. A similar move to tliis, on a. moditied scale, is on foot amongst the seamen. October 26. Numbers of unionists have returned to work during tlie past few days; and at some of the western colleries it has been arranged that unionists should work in the daytiuie, and free labourers the night shifts. October 127. The Chairman of the Miners' Conference states that tlie, strike is practically at an end owing to the dissensions among the Maritime delegates from Sydney and Melbourne, tlie later having sought 11. conference without tlie consent of the former Newcastle, October 26. At a meeting of delegates of northern miners it was resolved to re ■ sumo work at once ; but the final decision was resolved for a ballot of miners, the result of which will probably bo known to-morro;v night. A number of officers have forwarded to the press copies of letters written to the steamship owners in which tliev ask to be reinstated to their former positions, having seen the folly of their action in going out on strike. The Labour Defence Committee admit defections apart from the leaders. The Lithgow miners are dissatisfied at the position of affairs, and will resume work on Monday. Melbourne, October 27. Officers out 011 strike are returning to ships wherever practicable. Tlio wharf labourers and seamen complain bitterly of the action of the Maritime officers in deserting them. The Pastoralists' Union is formulating a scheme to organise the free shearers.
