The Argus has an article dealing with the New Zealand Railway Commissioners annual report, in which it states that in railways as in other matters it looks as if the sister colony had fairly turned the corner, and is to be congratulated accordingly. Comparing the New Zealand railway returns with Victorian, tho Argus states that the working expenses are 0 per cent less than last year's Victorian rates, and that the lines now pay 3 per cent., while ours this year gave very little more. Septembers. During the voyage of the Avenger Jour deaths occurred. Two of the crew died from accidental poisoning, the captain of gangrene, and a seaman fell ovi rboard. Sydney, September 2. The steamer Cuzoo had a peculiar experience on her last voyage. After leaving Gibraltar, a tidal wave struck the vessel, sweeping her decks and doing a largo amount ot'damage. Nearly everyone on board was injured more or less, and some so seriously that they had to be landed at Naples. Many persons had limbs broken. Adelaide, September 3. Mr I'layford has announced the policy of ihe new Government, a great point of which will be an enterprising extension of piibliu works, for which a loan will be asked. An extension of the railway will be made fruui the Great Northern line at a cost of a million aud-a-cjuarter, £30,000 will be speut ou new rolling stock; £170,000 on a new railway station, at Adelaide: and ±'40,000 on a water supply. The laud policy will include the repurchase of lands suitable for working men's blocks, and a bill is promised, making education free, the loss by which will he made up by an increase of the probate duty, in the case of income tax from property by 2d, and from trades by Id in tho il. Absentees will have to pay 4d in the ,-C more than at present.
