CABLE SUMMARY.

(by electric telegraph.— copyright.) London, May 3. The Government scheme for paying compensation to publicans whose license is taken away has been published. Mr Gladstone is reticient on the matter, but it is evident that the Liberals will utilise the proposal to damage the cause of the Unionists. Sir Wilfred Lawson and Mr W. S. Caine are organising an opposition to the proposals.

The Government are willing to fix the date of England's evacuation of Egypt, provided the Great Powers admit her permanent right to interfere in case of any internal clanger.

The Economist condemns a graduated iancl tax, proposed by Dr. Cockburn, Premier of South Australia, as v'icious and cruel, and states that its adoption will irretrievably damage the credit of the colony even worse than a year's drought. In the case of land companies it considers that the tax would lead to almost wholesale confiscation.

The Duke of Edinburgh opened the Edinburgh Exhibition on May 2nd. During his stay in the city the Duchess' jewels were stolen from the hotel.

In evidence before the Colonising Committee to-day, Sir Graham Berry, agent for Victoria, stated that his Government would not assist immigration to the colony. Referring to Australia, he thought her greater than the United States in proportion to population.

On the motion for the second reading of tho Irish Land Purchase Bill, the Marquis of Hartington voted with the Government. Mr John Morley attacked the measure. Lord .Randolph Churchill did not vote.
