London, May 3, During the debate on the Bill providing for the disestablishment of the Church of Scotland, Mr Gladstone stated that the Church was in a minority, and the burden of providing for its mility rested with its supporters. In his opinion the Church, in its existing form, was not the best embodiment of Protestantism. He would be glad to submit his conduct to the Midlothian electors The Marquis of Hartington opposed, and Mr Chamberlain supported the disestablishment.
In the House of Commons, Mr Cameron's Bill for the disestablishment or the Church of Scotland was rejected by a majority of 38. Mr Gladstone supported the measure.
