At the meeting of the Canterbury Trotting Association, it was resolved that Metropolitan clubs affiliated to the New Zealand Trotting Association be not required to submit their programme, and that they be empowered to pass all programmes containing trotting events within their respective provincial districts. provided the necessary fees are paid to the Association in accordance with the rules. Opinions were strongly expressed adverse to the present mode of granting totalisator permits, and a subcommittee was appointed consisting cf the delegates present to go thoroughly into the present system of granting totalisator licenses.
A validictory address, signed by most of the clergy in the diocese, was presented to Bishop Harper to-day. The address, which was read by the Dean of Christchurch, expressed the veneration of the subscribers for the bishop's character, and appreciation of hi 3 work during his long episcopacy. Bishop Harper, who was very much effected, briefly replied, thanking the clergy for the support they had always given him, and asked that it might be extended to his successor.
A luncheon was given to-day to Bishop Julius, and there was a very large gathering. BLENHEIM, Last Night.
Thomas Hastwick, aged 21, a fine athletic youth, was drowned in the Opawa river last evening. He was out with a companion duck-shooting, who missed him and came on to town. The police and his friends instituted a search and to-day at noon the body was found in the river close to the shore.
