At the meeting of the Colonial Sugar Company to-day it was stated that the question of the stoppage of black labour in Queensland had been carefully considered, with the result that the sugar industry could not be carried on in the tropics without Kanaka labour. The company had arranged for tests to be made in suitable districts in Fiji, with the view of removing the Queensland mills there. May 1. At the inquest on those killed in the recent railway accident at Bathurst, a verdict was returned, " That the cause of death was accidental." A rider was added, recommending the use oE side couplings, pending the fitting of the rolling stock with strong gear. Simpson, a distant relative of the late Mr David Berry, the millionaire, has lodged caveat against probate being granted to Mr John Hay, on the ground that at the time of making the will the testator was not in a sound state of mind. Under the deceased's will the Coolangatta estate was left to MiHay.

A discovery of white marble has been made at Casino, a town on the Richmond, 505 miles north of Sydney, and is pronounced to be equal to the present marble obtained from Carrara in Italy. Adklaide, May 2. Mr Henry E. Dorner has been appointed attorney-General. The operations for the Assets Company, which has taken over the Commercial Bank's assets are to be removed

to New South Wales.
