NEWS BY THE HINEMOA. SETTLERS ON THE VERGE OF STARVATION. A PLAGUE OF RATS. THE SETTLEMENT AN UTTER FAILURE. (BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Auckland, Last Night. The Hinemoa has returned from the Kermadecs. Cnpt. Fairchild reports that he found the settlers on the verge of starvation. They had consumed all the stores on the Island, including those belonging to the Bells, the original settlers. Eats had eaten all the early planted crops, and devasted the country as if swept by fire. If the Hinemoa had not arrived the settlers would have been reduced to extremities. As it was they had suffered great hardships Thirteen returned by the Hinemoa, who chiefly belong to Napier. Thirtyseven remained. Captain I 1 airchild supplied them with stores, but considers it impossible to maintain themselves on the island. The settlement is an utter failure.
