John Bctement, brewer, was fined the minimum penalty £50 and costs yesterday before the Resident Magistrate for an infringement of the beer duty Act. in neglecting to make a correct entry of the beer delivered. The whole plant was also confiscated. WOODVILLE, Last Night. • La Grippe is prevalent here, and in several cases it has assumed a severe form. DUNEDIN, Last Night. The Dunedin magistrate has granted a re-hearing of the ginger ale ease, stating that he had misapprehended Professor Black's evidence regarding sulphuric acid and carbonate. INVERCARGILL, Last Night. The man named Chris. Calderwood who has been arrested in Australia on a charge of attempting to defraud an insurance company of £1000 by gettiug a friend to report his death by drowning, the wife claiming the money, is believed to be ideutical with a man of the same name who got twelve years here in 1576 for the attempted murder of a cabman, Hugh Duddy, at Duck Creek, with the view to robbery, the victim having a large sum of money in his possession. Five years ago Duddy was drowned mysteriously in the Estuary. The doctors and chemists have been kept busy during the last six months. General sickness is more prolonged than has ever been known in the memory of the oldest inhabitants. Diphtheria is still prevalent., and, it is stated, one minister alone, read the burial service at the graves of seven victims during the last three weeks. Influenza is general and two large schools of over 1000 pupils are closed. Three men left here in a half decked boat for Dunedin, on Sunday, 23rd March, and have not since been heard of. A gale came on after they had sailed, and it is feared they have been drowned OHAUPO, Last Night. Capt. Russell, when addressing his constituents at Moawhanga, was questioned about the North Island Main Trunk Railway, and said he was in favour of buying Maori land along the linfe of road for settlement. His policy was to open up as speedily as possible such a splendid country.
