SUICIDE AT PARNELL.

_O : (BY TJCLEQRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT). Auckland, Last Night. A niOTKBSsiXG suicide took place early this morning, at Parnell. An old highly respected resident named Captain Samuel Frederick Hewell blew out his brains with a rifle. It appear.-.* that for some time past deceased has been suffering from melancholy-mania, for which he was attended lately, buth by Drs. Haines and Cremonini. Although his affliction had never shown a tendency towards self-destruction, still the medical gentlamen thought it prudent to keep the razors out of Captain Sewell's room. Deceased however managed to secure possession of a rifle, with which he effected this purpose about 7 o'clock this morning. Mrs Sewell left her husband, for the purpose of going to the kitchen to make a cup of cocoa, scarcely had she left the room, when she heard the report of a gun. Mrs Sewell at once returned to the room, where she was horrified to find her husband lying dead, still holding the rifle in his hands. He had shot hiuisalf in the head, blowing out hi* brains, ao that death must have bee" instantaneous. Captain Sewell was formerly in service in Ea3t India. He was 52 yeara of age.
