TEAWAMUTU.
The Library Concert. — The concert and dance in aid of the funds of the public library, was held in the Hall on Thursday evening, Rev, Mr Boler in the chair, it waa a great success both and a* a means of affording amusement. The Seesaw waltz by the children was perlectly rendered, and was loudly applauded. The feature of the evening however was the tableaux of "The Sleeping Beauty," in eight scenes, the dresses of the couriiers, guards, fairies, ladies in waiting, the King and Queen, and the prince who in the end married tho sleeper were very nice indeed. The fairies were must tastefully dressed, and the wonder is how such tiny mites could be drilled into standing so still and doing their parts so well. The little boys who . acted the part of guards looked quite soldierlike in their uniform and polished helmets, and the pretty children who represented the fairies, queen, and ladies in waiting completed a most attractive picture. Each ecene was so loudly applauded that the curtain was again raised in response to the desire of the audience. To Mrs Long and Mrs Andrew belong the creo.it of having instructed the children in their parts, and prepared the costumes. It is surprising that it should have been so very successful in spectacular erfect.when one considers the limited means at their disposal, and one might very well imagine that a veritable fairy's wand had been brought into requisition. Aside from the singing aud the dance, after the entertainment concluded, the children's performances in the See-saw waltz, and the tableaux aloue were worth the price of admission. Mr Vause, as a comic singer, kept the house in roars of laughter while singing his gongs. A very novel feature wan iiis performance on the mouth organ, upon which ho played a variety of aiis to the intense delight of the audience who encored him, and made him repeat the performance. "Home, Sweet Home," with variations, "The British Grenadiers," and various other well known tunes were played by him. It is certainly surprising how much music can be extracted from |auch an insignificant looking little instrument. The singing, however, was iniicti marred by the wretched piano which is totally out of tune from constant removals to and from the hall. It must have been painful to the singers and to Miss Archer, who played the accompaniu.eHte. The following is me programme :—Oveuure, piano, Mis»es JVlaudeiio and Lnwtber ; chorus, " Carnival " company; fong, "A Warrior Bold," Mr Ciiristie; duet, "U'er the Mhl," Musdames Long and Andrew; comic song, " Vt, Quack," Mr Vau.ie ; "The Parson and the Clerk," was given as an encore. " See Saw Waltz," by children; song," "The Song that Reached My Heart." Miss Tristram ; song, "I Fear no Foe," Mr Burgess; song, "Remember Mβ no More," Mis Smith; (this was inaudible at the end of the hall, possibly from the defective acoustic properties of the building). Interval of ten minutes. Overture piano, Miss Archer; song, "Barney O'Hay," Miss Tristram ; duet, "' Sol Fa Lesson," Miss Marshall and Mr Burgess ; tableaux, "The Sleeping Beauty," by children; song, "The Desert, , ' Mr Christie After a short speech by the chairman, the National Anthem was sung. The room was then cleared for dancing, which was kept up till about 3 a.m. An excellent supper was served in the supper-room, for which no extra charge was made. It certainly was the cheapest two shillings' worth ever offered to tho public in the way ot entertainment in this town.
