CAMBRIDGE WEST.
School Matters.—At a meeting of the Cambridge West School Committee, held on Saturday, the 14lh inst., it was rtsolved to briag tho compulsory clauses of the Act •into force after the holidays, against those parents who prevent their children from attending school. The head toacher was instiucted to furnish tho committee with a list of names of all absentee children. The head teacher's report showed a considerable falling off in attendance, through parents leaving the district. It also stated that it would require a special .effort to keop the ftvtrape up to 65, so as to retain the two pupil teachers. It was shown by the result of the recent standard examinations, that notwithstanding the irregular attendance, tho school still retains its efficiency, an out of 59 presented, 00 passed, and out of tbe nine others, five only failed, four being exceptions. It was decided to break up on the 20th (to-morrow), for the Christmas holidays, which will extend to Monday, the 3rd February, on which d ite it is hoped that pnreutx will see that their children attend punctually.
