SYDNEY SQUARE.

TO THE EDITOR. Sift. —I would like to call your attention to l.iio deplorable state of Sydney Square, and ask your assistance in getting something done to it in order that the manly game of cricket be not utterly extinguished in Hamilton. The powers that be have with a reckless generosity voted the sum of £3 in order to keep a pretty flower garden in good order. Of course, everyone will allow that a pretty flower garden for the councillors to stroll round of an evening is very nice, but it is hardly likely to bring any revsune or trade into the place. On the other hand if that sum had been spent on the Square, it would certainly give cricketers a chance of playing; which at present they are hardly able to do. With the permission of the City Fathers, I will make a little suggestion, and that is that the oak trees planted in the Square be protected by wire netting, and the Square let for sheep or horse grazing. During the year many flocks of sheep pass through, and arrangements could be made with the drovers, and possibly sufficient money could be obtained from them to keep the Square in good order. Unfortunately few of the Borough Councillors are athletes, and are therefore unable to understand the feelings of our young men on the subject. Still there is one absolute fact that by their action the Hamilton Borough Council is doing the best thing to kill cricket —I am, etc., : N.
