The following Bills were introduced and read a first time:—The Educational Endowments Bill, Government Loans to Local Bodies Act Amendment Bill, a Bill to Amend the Public Revenues Act, I<S7JS, the Public Debts Sinking Fond Act Amendment Bill, Westport-Ngakawau Railway Extension Bill. Sir H. A. Atkinson moved the second reading of tho Local Bodies Loan Act Amendment Bill. Agreed to. Tho House then went into committee on the Bill, which was reported without amendments, read a third time and pass id. The Native Lands Frauds Prevention Bill was further considered in committee. New clauses were added, providing a Trust Commissioner may use evidence taken before another Trust Commissioner, and that all lands which have passed the Native Lands Court bef re 188S shall be free of the restriction limiting to twenty owners if sold in areas not larger than 5000 acres or leased in areas of not more than 10,000 acres. Clause.') providing; that the Trust Commissioner shall enquire into the nature of the consideration paid for any alienation and shall refuse a certificate if lie thinks the consideration is not reasonably sufficient, was thrown out by 37 to 31. Progress was then reported on the Bill. The land Transfer Act amendment Bill was further considered in Committee but on tho motion of Mr Samuel, who objected to a Bill abounding with technicalities proceeding this session, progress was reported on the Bill. The Native Meetings Bill was discharged from tho Order Paper. The House went into Committee of supply on the estimates, but rose at 0 10. The House resumed at 7.30. and went into committee of supply. Mines Department, £1,520. Carried. Geological and Meteorlogieal, £3,250. Mr Goldie moved to reduce the vote by £395 as a pmt-wt against an increase of salaries and contingencies. Lest by -15 to 20. Stock branch, £2!),259. After a lengthy discussion on the administration of the Sheep and Rabbit Department. Mr Ward moved to reduce the vote for the Auckland district by i'.'iOO. Mr Mclvenzie (Waiiiemo), challenged the Government to appoint a commission to go to the Otago district and find out how the. liabbit Ajt was being administered. After some discussion an amendment to reduce the. vote was 10,-.t on the voices, and the vote then passed. Miscellaneous: £13,350. Carried. (Left sitting.)
