THE PROPERTY-TAX.
(by telegraph,— own correspondent.) \VELLINGTON, Friday. I informed you in an earlier measure that the Opposition would probably try conclusions against the Government on the question of the Property-tax as opposed to a Land and Income tax. The latest reliable information I have received to night is that Ministers fully intend nailing their colours to the inast on the question, and will fight it on the plain issue " Property-tax against any other form of taxation." Cards have been carefully pricked off, and Ministers reckon on a- majority of seven votes in favour of the Pro-perty-tax. Should they, however, suffer a defeat on the second reading of the Property Assessment Bill, in which the Pro-perty-tax debate is to be taken, the Government will ask for a dissolution, and go to the country on it. They have also decided not to accept Mr Barron's motion, although the member for Caversham has disclaimed any hostility whatever to the Government in moving it.
