LABOUR SETTLEMENT.
[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Friday. A large meeting of members interested in the promotion of labour settlements in various parts of the colony was held on Wednesday, Dr. Jlodgkinson in the chair. The meeting was called for the purpose of requesting the Government to place a sum of money on the Estimates with the object of forming those settlements so as to provide soma of tho unemployed with useful and profitable occupation. A similar movement was initiated last session by Major Steward, but tho scheme then simply applied to Waimate, and the vote of t!10,000, which the Government put on the Estimates, was struck out by the House. This year the \ote is intended to apply generally, and tho promoters of the movement are in hopes of being more successful. The meeting resolved that the whole of those present should, if convenient j to themselves, wait 011 the Government 011 Saturday next to apply for a vote for the purpose required.
