Native Taua.—The prevailing quietness of the district received a severe shock during the past week, when it was announced that a taua was being solemnly celebrated in the native settlement, the culprit being a dashing young half-caste, who had had the audacity to attempt to cross the secret threshhold of a whare, whore a charming grass widow was known to reside, her husband at tho time being on a visit to Waikato. On his return the faithful wife told her story, and on learning what had happeued, great was the rage of her lord and master. A taua in accordance with Maori custom was the result. The dashing young half-caste was much disconcerted at what had happened, but tho day for his revenge was at hand. He was fortunate in having a pretty unmarried sister who managed to captivate a married brother-in-law of tho enraged husband, with whom she eloped during the night, the destination being in tho direction of Taupo. The deserted wife started off in pursuit, but there is no word yot as to how she fared. The parties are all well known here.
