RAGLAN

Temperance Meeting.—A meeting for the purpose of forming a Band of Hope in this district was convened by Mr Elliott, Wesleyan minister, and was hold in the Wesleyan Church, Raglan, on Friday evening, 14th inst. Owing to the previous severe weather there was only a moderate attendance. Mr Elliott occupied the chair, and gave an address of some length bearing upon the cause. Various recitations followed. N.S.S. Co. Boats.-The N.S.S. Co. Gairloch, that had been weatherbound here for some days with cattle and sheep on board from the West Coast, got safely over the bar on Wednesday evening, 12th inst.. arriving in Onehunga the next day. It was a grand sight to see her crossing the bar. The first time of attempting she had to put back, apparently owing to a heavy squall coming on at the time. But at last, just at the edge of dark, she cleared her way through the wild waste of waters that dashed over her, and was soon out of sight on her way up the coast. The Rowena came into port on the afternoon of Wednesday, 19th inst., from Onehunga, bringing her usual supply of stores, along with a large quantity of building material. She was to leave for Kawhia the same night, taking away flax and other produce for Auckland. The Weather. — The heaviest hailstorm ever known here fell on the morning of Tuesday 11th. It came on us with a regular roar, and soon the hail came down " pell mell," the size of large marbles in many places. The whole ground was covered as with a white sheet, and the hail was in places from two to four inches deep. Several windows were broken in the township by the hail. The severe weather continued more or less until Sunday afternoon, June 23rd. On the previous evening a rather heavy thunderstorm burst over the district, the hail and rain coming down in a long and heavy downfall. The s.s. Rowena was detained for a day or two, but got safely into Kawhia the other day. Licensing Committee.— A meeting of the committee of the Whaingaroa special licensing district took place at the Courthouse, Raglan, at noon on Saturday, June 22nd. Present: Captain Jackson, R.M., T. Mitchell, J.P., R. C. Mathias and the native assessor, Pera Kiwi. Application for a license for the Whaingaroa Hot Springs Hotel was made by Mr S. L. Wilson and an accommodation license was

issued. Raglan Licensing District.— A meeting of the Raglan Licensing Committee next took place in the same building. Present: Messrs Pegler (chairman), Gilmore, Philip, and the native assessor, Pera Kiwi. The report on the Harbour View Hotel was of a very favourable character. Application was then made by the licensee, Mr George Moon, for reduction of fee which was reduced from £15 to £10.
