HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL
Thk monthly meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers at 7.30 on Tuesday evening. Present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr I. Coates) iu the chair, and Crs. Tippen, Wood. Missen, 11-11, Knox and Salmon. Nkw Counci u.oii.— The Returning Officer reported that Mr Denis Lies had been duly elected as councillor, vice.l. Frear resigned. Mr Lees was then introduced by Crs Bell and Tippen and made the usual formal declaration. After being congratulated on his election by His Worship, Cr. Lees took his seat. Revision CotiiiT.—Before proceeding to the ordinary business tho Council sat as a Revision Court to hear any objections to the burgess roll, and there heinsr none the Mayor moved, that the roll be certified to and tint Crs. Knox and Tippen sign it on behalf of the Council.—Seconded by Cr. Missen and carried. The minutes of the last meeting were road and confirmed and tho outward correspondence for tho month adopted. "Ax Kxri.AX.vnos."—Cr. Knox drew tho attention of the Council to a lettor which appeared iu Thk Waikato Times of April 13th headed "An Explanation " and signed William .Tones. He said that if tho assertions made in that letter were true, then the minutes of the Council were wrong, and he asked the clerk to rend the rough minutes of tho meeting held on April ilth, which coincided with the mi'iutes confirmed by tho Council.—Or. Knox then said that the. letter was a barefaced misstatement of facts, and he was only sorry that Cr. Jones was absent from the present meeting. He then moved that the letter appearing in Tun Waikato Times of April 13th, under the head of " An Explanation " and signed William Jones, is contrary to fact.—Seconded by Cr. Missen and carried. JiK.sk;nation. — A letter was received trom Mr J. M. (telling, resigning his position a.s Town Cleric, &c, to the Borough of Hamilton and Secretary to the Domain Board, and giving the Council two month's notice. —The Mayor said that he was very sorry to lose Mr Gelling's services from the Council, but as he was doing so for his own benefit, he would wish him every success in his new sphere of life. Several councillors spoke in the same strain, and the Mayor moved that the letter be received for further consideration, and that the Council at its rising adjourn to Tuesday, the 21st inst, at 7.30 p.m.—Seconded by Cr. Knox ami carried. ItATHI'AYKKS' MUTUAL INSURANCU BII.L. — A simil'ir eircibir to the one sent to the Waipa County Council was read and received. Ovku Valuation.—Mr F. Gaudin wrote, recommending a reduction of £10 on the valuation of the Convent.—Latter received. Kxthas. — A letter was received from K. Dellicar, stating that in the specifications for clearing Lots 405 and 411, the furze on thiroid and riv«r bmk was not mentioned, and as he had been ordered by the Town Clerk to clear these parts now claimed to be paid for them as extras. Letter received.
GllAvi-x. —It was decided to spread six yards uf gravel i>ll the footpath in Clydestree', and a siinilar quantity on Thackeraystreet. R. Wiiite applied for |ierinission to take, about 150 yards of gravel from the pit in Bri Igc-street, for use at the Hospital. —Tlio. Mayor stated that he had been asked by Mr Waite. and MrTurnrr fur parmis-qon to gut gravel for the Hospital from tlio pit, hut he had to refuse as the supply was running nut. He had told liof.li parties tint they cmld get the (travel from any of the other pits in the: borough except this one. — CV. Kii'ix moved that the action of the Mayor be confirmed.—Seconded by Cr. Bell and carried. BaTils.—An account wa» received from Mr Paunell, for in moy spout by him on necessaries in connexion with the HamiJtoii West baths during his management. The account was referred to the Jjaths Committee. PorN'i!KKKrKit's Ri-:ro!ir. —The ponndkeeper reported for the month of April that there had been one horse, which had boon sold, re dicing is over expenses, and 12 head of cattle impounded, the fees receive! being 12«.— The repoit was received and adopted. WoiiKS Rki'OHT.—The foreman of works reported that during the month a culvert had been built fit Mr Slade's property, tlio wiitor-Üble in Hood-street cleaned out, a culvert had been put in Nixon-street, all the water-tables, drains and culverts hal been looked to, the furze cut in several parts, and several minor jobs done. The repairs to No 1 Bridge are now in progress. The report was received and adopted. JJkaixauk. —The committee appointed to sea about tho drain through the Church Native Mission property, reported that they hud obtained permission to havo the drain deepened. Crs. Jones, Wood, and Ivnox were oppointad a committee to inspect this work with power to act, tho expenditure not;o exceed £1. The drainage at Hillsboto Terrace was referred to the Works committee to report on at the adj jurned meeting on Tuesday next. k'uilY.E. —A committee consisting of Ors. Knox, Lees, and Wood, was appointed to bring up a, list of those persons wh* require to bo notitiad to have the furze cleared fr >m the road adjoining their properties. Payments.—The following accounts were pa.-sed for payment;— J. Parr, !)s 7d ; Dr. Muroh, ss; R. I<\ Sandes, 2s !)d; U. Pearson, 13s; T. W. Maunder, 12s -Id: 0. Ma yes, Wa 9J ; R. Waite, 13s OJ ; J. G. Paiinell, 10s. Houit Ob' Miucm'G.— In accordance with notice given, Cr. Knox moved " that resolution No. 11 of sth December, ISB7, re Council holding meetings at 7.30 p.m. be altered to 3 p.m. instead of 7.30 p.m., the meetings to be held 011 the second Wednesday in each mouth."—Seconded by Cr, Salmon. The Mayor niovoU as un amendment that the hour for meeting be 7.15 p.m. on tho same day as at present.—Seconded by Cr. Wood. The amendment being put and cu'riud, the original motion was declared lost. JJog Rur.MTRAK. —Cr. Knox in accordance with notice given, moved that Win. Mankteloiv, of Hamilton Jidst, be appointed a sub-registrar of dogs for tho Borough i.'f Hamilton and that his residence situated on Lot 208, Hamilton East, Cambridge road, be appointed an additional Registration Office, at which dogs may Im registered, and that remuneration be allouvd to the said dog registrar at tlio rat.ii ol Is (id tor every dog registered.—Seconded by 1 h>: Maym-.'-Cγ. Lb«x moved as an amendment that the remuneration be Is per dog.-Seconded by Cr. Silninii, —The amendment was put, and the voting resulted : JAirthe Mayor and Crs. L'.e.s, Salmon, and Bell, against Crs. Knox, Tippen, Missen and Wood. The voting being equal, the Mayor gave his casting vote against the amendment, awl it was therefore lost, The original motion was then put anil curried.
This concluded the business, and the Council rose.
