A meeting of those interested in the. Irish Home Rule movement wa* held in thn Catholic Institute, Auckland, on Monday, to arrange for thn reception of Sir Thomas Ksmonde and Messrs Di'lon and Deasey, the delegates now visiting the colonies. There is nothing in the constitution of New Zealand to pi event people meeting together to display their feelings in regard to any cause, good or bad, in any part of the world. The Auckland people met the other day to oppress sentiments towards the S.imnans. Not very long ago a section of the citizens gathered together to exhibit sympathy for the condemned murderers, CalFrey and l"onn. No one denie"! them the privilege of meeting as they liked and saying what th,\v liked, and no one was any the worse for it. But, when, as in the present cane, an attempt, is m iile to associate the legislature of New Zealand with a political agitation outside our own domains, with which the bulk of the colonists have no sympathy or about which they are little disturbed; and to coerce our representatives into implicating themselves in proceedings which many regard with ill-f.ivonr and disgust, it is timn to say a word of protest. The meeting on Monday styled the. proposed reception of the delegates a public act, and determined to request, the member* of both Houses to allow themselves to be placed on the committee, with a hint, in terrorem, that if they refused they would be classed as enemies. This was done impressively with the evident intention of inspiring fear as to the next general elections. Can audacity go further than this? The menuers, as public men representing all classes of the community and nit an insignificant .section only, will no doubt treat, the invitation as gentlemen should ; they will show that they are misters of their own actions and of their own opinions, and are not to be terrorised by immoral sympathisers of lawless agitators from abroad. Happily we are yet a cut above that sort of thing in this colony.
