ATTEMPTED MURDER.
(BY TICMCGK.U'H. —I'RKSR ASSOCIATION.) Westpout, Monday. A murdehous assault took place at Denniston. David Lawton, coal miner, retired to his bed with his wife on Saturday night. He awoke at about 2 a.m. on Sxnday, and obtained a coal pick, and with the head of the tool struck his sleeping wife on the back of the head, fracturing her skull. Luwtnn then gave hitnsclf into custody. He m believed to be of unsound mind, as twite within the last year ho was charged with lunaey, but medical evidence did not warrant his committal to the asylum. Lawton is a Yorkshireman about 40 years old. Lawton says something impelled him to kill his wife. She gave one scream only. Tliere .ire no hopes of the woman's recovery. Lawton was given a sleeping draught and morphia yesterday, and the effect upon him is very bad ; in fact it is feared that he may succumb.
