Viscount Mori was assasinated on February 11th, by fanatical religionists, who plunged a knife into his abdomen because lie entered a shrine without removing his boots. The Treaty recently concluded botween China and Portugal was brought to an issue by China threatening to blockade Macao unless Portugal accepted its treaty which virtually places Macao at the disposal of the Chinese Customs authorities. By a fire, at Pekin Palace, damage was done estimated to reach three million fcaels. During the riots at Chin Kiang the houses of the British Consul and two clergymen and the Baptist Church were burned. The Methodist chapel, American Consulate and Custom House were partially destroyed. The steamer Paigun, bound from New Zealand to Hong Kong, ran ashore in Palama passage, North of Borneo. A boat was sent 110 miles to obtain assistance, but in the meantime the ship floated off and reached Manilla, afterwards arriving safely at Hong Kong.
