Application Fuom Thames Board.— Mr Chepmell said a statement had been made that E. Thompson had been admitted to the Thames Hospital Board at the request of the Piako County Council. He had asked the Clerk to search the minutes of the Council, and he failed to find any authority for Thompson's admission. William's Children.—The Secretary read a letter from the clerk of the court at Te An ilia, with reference to William's children, which stated that they had been committed to the Thames Industrial School by Warden Kendriclc, and that their father was supposed to have gone to New South Wales. A telegram from the clerk of the R.M. court, Thames, stated the Industrial School was under the control of the Charitable Aid Board. In reply to members, the Secretary said the claim was £US, and the amount was still going on.—Mr Clements thought they should let the matter alone, and allow the Thames Board to put the law in motion.—Mr Chepmell moved, "That legal opinion be taken, aa to whether the Board is liable for the demand made by the Thames Board."—Seconded by Mr Seddon, and carried.
Dissatisi'ikdTenderkhs.— Messrs Garlick and Cranwell wrote asking why their tenders for furniture, etc., was not accepted. Tho Secretary replied that the tenders had been accepted according to samples sent, on their merit, and the Board was not bound to accept any particular tender. Subsidy.—The Treasury wrote advising the sum of £250 14s lOd being placed to tho Board's credit.
Tins Maxwell anl- Paiush Casks.—Mr Somerset, clerk ot Raglan Road Board, wrote asking that the relief in these cases be continued. Mr Sandes thought as Mrs Parish had sons lo support her that she had no claim on tho Board. As regards Maxwell, he thought the Board should continue his allowance as he had no legal claim on his relations, and it not assisted the man would starve. The Board could in the meantime obtain further information as regards Maxwell's son-in-law. T. Evans Claw rem Cotu'ensation.— A letter from Mr D. Richardson on this subject was read. The Board decided Mr Evans had no claim on them, and on the notice of Mr Brunskill, seconded by Mr Sandes, the correspondence was received. Seouktauy'h Rki'Oht.— Since the last meeting of the Board the state of tiie Hospital is as followsßemained from last month, 5 ; admitted, 7 ; discharged, 3 ; remaining, 9 (5 males and 4 females). The expenditure for the past month amounts to £289 3s lid, of which £12G IDs 5d is ordinary expenditure, the balance, £1(12 4s Gd, being for furniture for the new building, and which cannot bo completed until the arrival of bedsteads and lamps from England, there being no suitable ones procurable in Auckland. The contracts for Hospital supplies and rations terminate on the 31st instant, and, aa fresh tenders will have to be called for beforo the next meeting of the Board, I would respectfully suggest that the matter be left in the hands of the House Committee. Dr. Kenny having drawn the attention of the committee to the impossibility of treating cases successfully for the want of the necessary surgical instrument and other requisites, the Committee recommended that the sum of £150 be placed at their disposal for the purchase of such instruments and other surgical requisites aa Dr. Kenny may deem necessary, and a list of which lies upon the table. The Committee also consider that it is absolutely necessary to roof the old building and kitchen with galvanised corrugated iron before the winter. The new building being lower than the old one, the latter would always be exposed to the danger of catching fire from sparks alighting on the shingles. The committee therefore called for tenders for the work, and they now recommend that the lowest (£49) be accepted by tho Board. There will also be two large ventilators required, which will cost about another £20. I have been unable to obtain the property valuations under the new assessment, but if made under the old one, the proportions of the several counties and boroughs in the district at 1-flth of a penny in the £ will be as follows, viz. :—Piako, £431 8s Id ; Waikato, £307 17s 4d ; Waipa, £290 4s 5d ; Rnglau, £82 7s lid ; Hamilton, £50 18s Gd ; Cambridge, £43 17s 10J, us against, Piako, £774 0s 5d ; Waikato, £552 7s Gd ; Waipa, £520 14s 4d ; Raglan, £117 10s Gd ; Hamilton, £91 7s 5d ; Cambridge, £78 14s lOd for last year, or rather more than one hslf.
Improvement to Old Building.—The Chairman stated that the House Committee had taken into consideration the matter of re-roofing the old hospital building with iron, and putting in additional ventilators. —Mr Brnnskill objected to the Board incurring more expense, and moved that nothing be done as regards roofing or the ventilators.— Seconded by Mr Clement?.—Mr Seddon said they could not shut their eyes to the danger of fire, arising from the inflammable roof of the old building, anil causing the tlie destruction of the new buildings.—Mr Sandes thought the risk from fire not so great, and wai inclined to vote against the expenditure unless absolutely necessary.— Mr Hunter thought the roofing with iron very necessary.—Mr von Stunner supported the expenditure on the grounds of safety.—Tlia Chairman said the House Committee had advertised for tenders for re-roofing, and the lowest was £49.—Mr Chepmeli moved and Mr Sandes seconded an amendment that the ventilators be done without.—Mr Seddon thought it advisable to have ventilators, as the doctor had recommended tliein on at least the two front rooms, and moved an amendment to that effect, seconded by Mr von Sturmer.—The Chairman thought they should use as much precaution as possible to make the rooms comfortable. —Mr Chepmeli withdrew his amendment.—Mr Seddon's amendment was put and carried, and the original question was lost. Tenders,—The tenders for roofing were then read as follows T. Evans, £49, (accepted) ; ,T. Stoupe, £54 ; ,T. Taylor, £G5 17s Gd ; W. J. Pearson, £53 15s. —It was resolved that a sum not exceeding £10 be allowed for one ventilator, connecting both front rooms. More Surgical (Appliances. — Tho Chairman informed the Board that Dr. Kenny had submitted a list of.new instruments, to cost £150, required to make the appointments of the Hospital complete, and enable all cases of any description to be properly treated.—Mr Chepmeli moved that the instruments as requistioned for be procured.—Seconded by Mr von Sturmer and carried.—The Secretary's report was then adopted, with the. alteration as regards the ventilators. Monthly Relief.—lt was resolved to grant the usual monthly relief with the addition of Maxwell at Raglan.
