<, (BY TELEGKAPII.—PRESS ASSOCIATION). Wellington, Friday. An effort is being made to procure the release of Charles Cheymol, formerly wine merchant in Wellington, who was convicted a couple of years ago for falsifying bond warrants and sentenced to four years. A petition to His Excellency the Governor, praying for his libeiation was circulated today. The grounds on which it is sought to eniiat Vice-liegalclemency are (1) that tho prisoner had borne an honest character for ten years prior to his conviction and earned tho respect of the mercantile community. (2). That the passage of the First Offenders Probation Act shows that it was the intention of the Legislature that first offenders should be leniently treated when possible. (3). That Cheymol was tempted to commit tile crime by his distressing financial position, and (4) that tho ruin of his business prospects and degradation are sufficient punishment for his offence. The Public Works Department has decided to connect all the Gov eminent buildings with the lire brigade station by means of electric tiro signals. A fresh difficulty arose in Hannah's boot, factory to-day over the discharge of one man, and tho operatives who wero on strike and intended to return to-day have gone away again,
