THE LATE CONCERT TO BAND MASTER METTAM.
TO THE EDITOR. Sib,—There is a statement made in your report of the entertainment given for the benefit of Bandmaster Mettam, regarding the conduct of part of the audience, which reflects discredit upon perfectly innocent men. You charge members of the volunteer company with causing a dog to howl whilst' Capt. Reid was singing. As I was one of two volunteers in uniform in the corner from whence the disturbance came, and witnessed the whole occurrence, and as a lieutenant of the compauy sat in the immediate neighbourhood, perhaps you will give me spneo in your valuable paper to deny the allegation. That some members of the Hamilton Light Infantry misconducted themselves upon the occasion, I regret to have, to admit, but I hope in common fairness you wi'l exonerate innocent men from the charge of causing the particularly disgraceful and unseemly noise of which you complain.—l am, sir, A Volunteer.
TO THE EDITOR. Slit,—Kindly permit me through the columns of your valuable paper to say a word or two on a report which appeared in the account of Bandmaster Mettam's concert of your last issue. In this it was stated that the volunteers in uniform created a disturbance by causing a dot , to howl while singing was going on. Now, not only myself but many others not concerned with the volunteers at all, can give a decided contradiction to the report referred to, and I'm sure Sergt. McGratli, who ejected the dog, can bear mo out in this point, as the euilty party or parties who are not volunteers are well-known and certainly ought to have known how to conduct themselves in n better manner. Hitherto, the Hamilton Lieht Infantry (of which I'm proud of being a member), have, carried with them a good reputation, and it is very unfair and annoying w'.ien false reports calculated to do them an injury are circulated concerning them. Trusting they will be favoured with a little more fair play in future. —I am, etc., Volunteer. Hamilton East, 21st. December, ISBS.
