THE CABLES
[BY TELEGRAPH—PUKSS ASSOCIATION! Wellington, Wednesday. The following information has been supplied by the Superintendent of the Cable Company at Wakapuaka :—The interruption to the Port Darwin, cables in July was caused by volcanic disturbances, as previously explained, and the lasttwo interruptions were due to extensive renewals. The Company are carrying them off Banjoewangi where both cables were found to be on bad grounds and in dangerous proximity, owing to strong currents having drifted them together. The renewal and original cables have been finished, after inserting one hundred and twenty-four knots of new cables. The Company's two repairing ships Sherard Osborne and Recorder are now engaged in renewing the duplicate line, which is nearly completed. These renewals, which will be very costly and will greatly strengthen the communication ought t» give a long immunity from further trouble. The manufacture of the cable to be laid between and Roebuck Bay, about one thousand miles in length and costing nearly £120,000, is almost completed and will be despatched during December. When laid Australian communication ought to be thoroughly secured. The interruptions have been much magnified as the total period of communication interrupted since duplicating, including recent ones, was only forty-one days, averaging less than five days per annum.
