PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL.

The usual monthly meeting of tho Piako County Council was held at 11 o'clock a.m. J on Thursday at the Phoenix Hotel, Morrins- | ville. There were present : Crs. Chepmoll '• (chairman), Heaney, Hnrrell, Mills, Hunt, : Murphy, Browning and Brunskill. Hospital Contribution. —A reply was ! received from the Thames and Coromandel United District Hospital and.Charitable Aid Board in answer to a letter from the county clerk, stating that the sum of £519 10.-) had been received on the sth May last . from the Battery Company in liquidation : of the debt due by tho Council to tho Board, and also that the Board would feel much . obliged by an early settlement of the balance, £394 9s, which is bearing interest at the rate of 8 percent, per annum. Wiukßope.—A letter was received from the Champion Silver and Gold Mining Company, offering to purchase the steel wire rope which had been purchased by the Council for use on the tramway, but which was now lying unused at Waiorongomai, and asking that the price be made as low as possible. It was decided to sell the rope at one half the original cost, viz., £04 Si. Waiouongomai Punt.—Tho clerk reported that no application had been made to him for the right to run the punt since the last meeting »f the Council. Finnerty's No. 3 Contract. — The engineer reported that Finnerty had declined to take up this contract, and that Mr George Walker, junior, had offered to take it over at Finnerty's price. The chairman moved that the Council transfer contract No. 3 from Finuerty to Geo. Walker junior, and authorise the engineer to get the bonds signed toy Mr Walker as contractor. Seconded by Cr. Murphy and carried. Valuation Roll.—An application was received from Mr A. H. Whitehouso to have the name of Jessie Smith placed on the valuation roll in lieu of his, as occupier of section 37, Lipsey's Te Aroha. The clerk was instructed to take the usual steps to mako tho alteration as requested. The olerk having reported that no objection iiad been received to Mr W. Fieldei 's app'ieition to have his name placed on the valuation roll, as occupier of allotment 13S, Wain-rongom.-ii. The chairman was authorised to make the necessary alteration. Slaugatkrino License.— Tho Clo.rk reported that some time back Messes Conies and Murphy applied for a slaughtering license, that although it had been granted it had never been tiiken out. Hearing that Conies had started butchering at Te Aroha he wrote to him informing him that although a license to slaughter had been granted to him, it had never been taken out, and that if he was slaughtering now he was liable to prosecution, but if he forwarded the license fee £5, the license would be issued, and nn further action taken. No answer had been received to this letter, although ample time had elapsed for one to be sent, therefore acting under instructions from the chaii mai, he had requested Serge nit Emerson to ascertain whether Cornea was slaughtering or not, and if he was to take immediate steps against him for doing so without a license. Traction Enimnes.—A circular letter was f,.rwardnd to the Waipa and Waikato County O'.m-.ciK asking them to c.w.porate with thn Piako County Council in forming by-laws f..r tlHi-usnhition of traction engines oil thi! County roiids. Native Land Rates..—A circular was received fr»m the Propp.ity-Tax Department asking Ilia Council to forward a schedule in accordance with S.-ctinn 7of the Crown and Native Linds Hating Act Repe >1 Act 1888, .-is io localises in which it was divided to spend the rate* derivable from Native Lnuds.—Tho Chairman stated that. the. foil .wins amounts worn received from thrt different ridings :-Te Aroha ruling, £'.) 3s o£l ; Wait...., £4ii Ss lid; Patetere riding, £(>9 Us OVI ; Matamata riding, £17 2s O.W ; Taotaon.a riding, nil. It was resolved to spend the rates thus, le Aroha, on road through Waiharakeke Block ; Waitoa, on Piabi-Cumbridge Road though Manpraknwa Block; Patetere, £00 on Lichfiold-To Aroha Road and balance on Cainbridge-Tauranga Road near Hunga ; Matainuta, on Lichh'eld-Te Aroha road.— Tho Chairman moved that the amounts derivable in the Waitna and Matamata Ridings from native land rates be handed over to tho Waitoa and Matamata Road Boards, respectively, to be spent in the manne;' indicated by the Council.—Seconded by Cr. Horrell and carried. PuorosKn Amkndkh Puur.ro Works Act.—The Chairman moved that tho following suggestions be made with reference to the above Bill, to be introduced next session :—(1) That Sectr.in 10 oi the proposed Act should be made to apply to Crown and native lands as well s>3 to lands in private hands ; (2) That Sub-ssetion 1 of Section 10 be erased; (3) That it be sufficient to paint public road on the gate across the road; (4) That Sub-section 5 of Section 15 bo struck out.—Seconded by Cr. Murphy and carried. Fink.—lt was decided to fine J, B innerty £2 for not having finished his work up to contract time.
