WAIKATO COUNTY COUNCIL.
Tun usual monthly meeting of the Waikato County Council was hold at the Council Chambers, Hamilton East, yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Present: Crs. Primrose (chairman), Steele, Barugh, Johnson, Forrest and Smith. Public Wouks Act.—The Minister of Public Works forwarded a draft of the Public Works Amendment Bill, to be presented to the House next session, which was read and discussed. The clauses referring to the for/.e question did not meet with the approval of the councillors, as they considered that should the Bill be passed, the local bodies would have too much power iti their hands. Pkauh Grove Reserve.—'The committee appointed to report on this reserve made the following recommendations : -1. \That the boundary fence be completed with the exception of that adjoining Coates' road, at both ends of which gates would be erected ; 2. that all briars and gorse be grubbed out, and all other necessary clearing done as far as funds will permit it; 3. that levels bo taken and a mam drain opened through the swamp. We believe that these improvements can be effected for a sum not exceeding £150, and are convinced that the property will then let readily at from £30 to £40 per annum for grazing purposes. —Andrew Primrose, Henry Steele. — —Crs Johnson and Forrest both said that they would oppose the expenditure of the County funds in this direction as they considered the matter simply a speculative one.—The Chairman said that the Council would carry out these recommendations only preparatory for the object for which the ground was gi-en by the Government, viz., a Model Farm site.—Cr. Smith moved that the matter be deferred till next meeting so as to allow any councillors who may desire to visit, the ground.—Seconded by Cr. Johnson and carried.
