(BY TKLEGKAI'H—OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

Auckland, Wednesday. At tho Police Court to-day, the charges were heard i.guinst John McMahtm and William Hayter in connection with the Onehunga reservoir. Defendants deposed that they went to the reservoir for the purpose of ascertaining the height of the water, access having bean refused to the rnteIjiiyers. The Bench expressed the opinion that some injury bud been done and that the defendants hud no right to go to the reservoir at that hour of the night. They aid not wish to b>! bard and would therefore inflict a Hno of ten shillings each and costs. The charge against McMahon for being found by night armed with a bludgeon was withdrawn. Mr Thompson, M. H.R., received a letter from the Hun. Mr Mitchelson informing him thai, Auckland will b<s gazetted a depot for quarantining cattle as soon as the necessity for such a step arises. It would' intau the expenditure of a considerable sum to fit up the necessary places, and the Minister considers that this would not be justified in the face of the fact that little or no cattle are imported into Auckland. During last night and to-day, a strung wind was blowing from the West, accompanied by frequent heavy showers of rain that made the, waters of tho Waitemata rather rough, but no damage to shipping in the harbour was done, beyond the swamping of a schooner riggerl oyster b'>at, lying to leeward of Hobsun-street wharf.
