Social Mektisc—At the last temperance meeting held here the following programme wan given, viz:—Hymn lo (Sankey's); Chairman's speech ; song, "Turningare the Wheels of Time," choir; reading, "Rival .Friend*," MrSteplmnson ; hymn (Sankey'sj) 323; speech, Mr Turnet, gave his life experience as a total abstainer in a telling speech of some length, which was received with great applause; song, "Beautiful Isle of the Sea," Miss K. .Savage; hymn, " Along the River of Time," choir; song, "If Papa were only Heady," Mr Stephenson ; song, " Who is a Brave Man," choir; song, "There's a Light in the Window," , Mr C. Moou ; song, " Tired," Miss Wallis ; song, " Good He;irt aud Willing Hand," choir; hymn, "Never Drink Again," choir. At the close of thn meeting four persons went forward to sign the pledge, and don the " bit o' blue."

Ilu Industry.—This is still baing extended in this district. Messrs Donaldson and Bulford's new mill at Wainui is now in full swing. Messrs Sewell and Diguan have secured the old mill site of Duncan and Mitchell, and the machinery and timber for the mill is expected by steamer shortly. Messrs Ormiston have leased the flaxinill of Mrs 'Wilson at Okete.und it will soon be in working order. It is expected that before the winter is passed no less than eight mills will be working in the district, employing a considerable number of hands, and being of great benefit to the place. Introduction- ok Trout.—Mr T. B. Hill, having written from Auckland stating that a number of trout were cominp by the Stella on her way down the coast, preparations were made to receive and distribute the same throughout the district, when a telegram was received stating that "they had all died." The Stella proceeded to Kawhia without calling here for that reason, and great was the disappointment of those who had proceeded to the township for the purposo of receiving the young fish. j County Ei.kotion.—The long pxpected : election of fresh councillors seems near at hand, the various road boards sending information to the council, to be furnished to the Government for the purpose of a fresh election, so that we shall soon be in the midst of a contest for tha various vacant seats.

Thk Wkathek. — The weather, which has beou fine for nearly a fortnight, with hard frosts at times, has now broken, high winds, with heavy rain, prevailing the last few days. Mktkoks. —Fresh showers of these bodies continue to full, sums: of them being most brilliant. Two fell a ;bw nights ago just at night fall, one being large and bright, and diu other, though smaller, was accompanied with a rumbling noise liko thunder. ■
