ROBBERY AT WAIORONGOMAI.

A MOST impudent and barefaced robbery was committed here last evening, whereby Mr Edward Hickey (a quiet respectable labouring man) was eased of the sum of £101), MOO in gold and £!) in notes. Mr Hickey, who lives in a little two-roomed cottage at the rear of the Premier Hotel, left his home at four o'clock in the afternoon to take his usual stroll, after seeing the money was all safe, and on roturniug home found it was gone. He at once communicated with the police who promptly arrived on the scone, and two suspected individuals were searched, but nothing was found on them. Suspicion then fell on a person who was sesn coming from the direction of the house at about 5.30 p.m., and who has the reputation of being concerned in such matters beforo. He was examined, but indignantly denied the charge. Much sympathy is felt here for Hickey, and it is to be hoped that the perpetrator will not long escape the vigilance of the police. Surprise is expressed that Hickey should have kept such a large sum as mentioned above in his bedroom, without even lock or key, but being somewhat illiterate and prejudiced towards banks, it has always been his custom to keep his money in his house. The money was in a tin-box underneath the mattrass.
