MINING.

New Find, Waiokongomai,— For the past week very fair headway has been made in the 4")0 feet level, quartz stringers are now appearing in the face, which indicates that a reef is not very far ahead. Diamond Guixy.— The country in the face is getting a little easier, and in breaking the reef down a little gold has been occasionally seen. In Maisey's contract (New Find) very fair crushing dirt is being obtained, the returns of the battery showing up for a good yield. Colonist.— The reef in this mine is looking well, and at almost every breaking down gold is seen, crushing will probably tako place shortly, when we hope to report a good payable return. Operations at the tailing mill are progressing steadily. There are s(i berdans in constant work night and day. The roaster will be idle for a day or two to enable some slight repairs to bo effected in the internal part of the cylinder. While writing of the roaster, we may state that the treatment of the roasted tailings has been somewhat altered, with satisfactory results. Formerly, as soon as the tailings came from the roaster, they were cooled by a spray of water before being treated in the berdans. Now the sand, after leaving the roaster, is spread on the concrete floor, and there allowed to cool naturally, thus getting rid of sulphur and any other noxious passes that are considered so deleterious in the matter of gold-saving.
