RAGLAN COUNTY COUNCIL.
The usual monthly meeting of the Raglan County Council was held at Whatawhata at 12 o'clock yesterday. The following Councillors were present : Cr--. McDonald (chairman), Brooks, Hodgson and Gibb. After the minutes had been read and confirmed, the outward correspondence was read and received. Pitnt. —The Waipa County Council wrote with reference to the punt at Ngaruawahia, that the matter was under consideration, Mr. Dawson to report on the matter at their next meeting. Grants. —The Public Works Department intimated that it was intended to hand over the Raglan-Whatawhata road to the County, and that as soon as that was done the balance of the grant of £250 for this road, unexpended, about £190, would be handed over. They also stated that no grant had been made for the Kaniwhaniwha-Harapepe road. Furze Nuisance.—The Ohinemuri County Council wrote, saying that they would co-operate with the Council in this matter by forwarding a similar resolution to their member in the House. Churchill Punt.— The Waikato County Council wrote to the effect that Mr Johnson had been authorised to hand over the punt to anyone appointed by this Council to take charge of it. Cr. Gibb having been authorised to take charge of the punt s lid tlut it had been sunk bntwas now raised and lie had written to Mr Johnson asking him to hind over the punt. Crs. Brooks and Gibbs were authorised to spend a sum not exceeding £5 in putting the punt in repair, and to bring up a report at next meeting. Doc Registrar.—The cleric of the Iviiioi Road Board, wrote that his Board had levied a dog tax themselves, and it would not be necessary for the Couucil to levy one, as their collector would collect it. Road Wanted.—Mr Patterson asked for the Council to open up the road from the river up to his place at Churchill. Resolved that from want of funds they would not be able to do the work requested. County Map.—The District surveyor wrote, stating that he had forwarded a plan of the County, showing the land tenure, ridings and roads, and asking that the public be allowed the use of the map. The request was granted, and the map will be mounted and hung up in the office, and can be used during office hours. Public Works Act.—The Whangerei County Council forwarded a copy of a petition for presentation to the House of Representatives, praying that the Public Works Act be amended with reference to the simplification of the means for the acquirement or exchange of lands for public roads by local bodies, and asking for the co operation of the council. As the council did not see its way to support the petition, the letter was received. Subsidy.—The Property-tax Commissioner wrote stating that the council had withdrawn all claims for subsidy previous to the 31st March last. The Clerk was instructed to inform the commissioner that the council did not withdraw any claim for subsidy for year ending 31st. March last, and still claim for subsidy for year ISS6-87. Akatka Road.—Mr John Guy offered to keep the Village Settlement road in repair from Ngaruawahia to tho Huntly Junction for £13 per year. As the council have not taken over the road, they eould not appoint Mr Guy as requested, but they are of opinion that the Government should give the men at the settlement work on the road as agreed upon, and the chairman was requested to visit the Akatea settlers and find out their position with the Government with regard to the road and punt. Cr. Hodgson and the Chairman were appointed a deputation to wait on Major Jackson, M.H.R., prior to his departure to Wellington, and interview him on this matter, and others in connection with the council. Fusng.—The balance-sheet showed a balance of £169 (i< 10$ d at the bank. Payments.—The following accounts were passed for paymentJ. B. Somerset, £10; sundries, £4 12s 7d ; F. J. Brooks, £9 10s; R. C. Mathias, £2 15s ; J. Reid, £1 4s ; Champtaloup and Cooper, £5 13s; A. Gibb, £9 ; J. Hodgson, £4.
Engineer.—The following tenders were received for Engineer to the county at per cent. 011 tlie works done :—James Calderwood, 7 per cent, on work done ; J. D. Grutt, 7A per cent; T. G. Sandes, 7h per cent ; T. Redmond, 8 per cent ; K. Frissell, informal.—Oil the motion of Cr. Brooks, seconded by Cr. Hodgson the tender of Mr T, G. Sandes was accepted. Doo Registrars.—'The following dog registrars were appointed ;—Whangape. Ohewhero, Te Altau Ridings, Te Rata Te Ahu, at Is per collar ; Pirongia Riding, J. li. Thompson, 9d per collar; Karioi Riding, J. B. Somerset, Is per collar. Stoxk Culvert.—There being only one tender received for this work, it was resolved that the acceptance of tenders be deferred to some future time. Rates.—The secretary was instructed to take legal proceedings against defaulting ratepayers at once, and that Mr A. C. Fookes be taken as a test case, Mr Hay to be retained as solicitor for the Council in this case. Dor; Collars. — The chairman was authorised to procure 250 dog collars. Safe.—Mr I). B. McDonald was author rised to procure a safe for the Board in Auckland. This being all the business the meeting rose.
