Hector has visited tho lignite deposits 011 the Waingawa River, near Masterton. He reports them as of too recent origin to give a chance of finding substantial .coal. The strata promise a better result for gold than for coal. An impudent attempt was made to rob the Caledonian Hotel on Saturday Jnight but without success. The burglars were apparently surprised. A few days ago tho Forester's Hotel was entered at night and £40 stolen, [t is believed there is an organised gang of thieves in town.
