o [l)Y TELEGRAPH.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington-, Monday. All the Ministers, with the exception of the Defence Minister, are now in Wellington, and Cabinet meetings are to be held daily. The Native Minister will probably leave for Wanganui in a day or so, in order to be present at the native meeting to be held there. In all the city aud suburban districts tho local option polling has been against an increase of licensed houses or additional New Zealand wine licenses. Tne Patent Wellington Slip Company declare a dividend of 5 percent. The Company are making arrangements to undertake themselves all tho necessary repairs to vessels, which hitherto have been carried out by local founders. Sir J. Hector has visited tho lignite deposits 011 the Waingawa River, near Masterton. He reports them as of too recent origin to give a chance of finding substantial .coal. The strata promise a better result for gold than for coal. An impudent attempt was made to rob the Caledonian Hotel on Saturday Jnight but without success. The burglars were apparently surprised. A few days ago tho Forester's Hotel was entered at night and £40 stolen, [t is believed there is an organised gang of thieves in town.
