LOCAL SELF-GOVERNMENT WITH A VENGEANCE.
TO TUB EDITOR. Sir, —I sue by the report of the last meet ing of the Waipa County Council that some of the wiscaeres of that renowned body propose to stop the ratepayers using sleighs in two of the ridings—viz., Whatawhata and Te Rore. Now, if they kne\r anything at all about roads—and they arc supposed to know a little, I presume, or they would not be sent into the Council—they would know that a sleigh slides over the ground and does not cut up the roads one-hundredth part as bad as a narrow wheeled waggon. The latter their own engineer reported as doing a great deal of damage to the roads some months bank, and no action was taken, but I presume some of the great meu of the Waipa County Council have waggons and not sleighs, so that is a horse of another colour. lam not ail inhabitant of the Waipa County, but in reading over the report, I thought it is coming it rather strong, that the ratepayers are to be dictated to as to what sort of a vehicle they shall use. A ratepayer that can only afford to use a sleigh has as much right to use the roads, as the one that owns a wagcou, and .pays his rates for doing so. Men are sent into these councils to look after the public works of the county, not to make fools of themselves, and vex and annoy the ratepayers and waste the public money. As there are no police in the two districts named, who is to inform on the delinquents'! Hoping you will find a corner for this.— I remain, dear sir, yours, etc., ___________ Boz -
