Hamilton West.

The annual meeting of householders in the Hamilton West School Ditrict was held in the Public Hall, Hamilton, last night, in accordance with the notification from the Central ]}oard. About fifty householders were present. Mr T. (i. Sundes being called upon to preside, read the circular convening thejmeeting, and the directions for the conduct of the meeting. The minutes of the proceedings of the last annual meeting were read and confirmed. The Secretary, Mr Parr, then read the balance-sheet and the committee's report on the working of the school during the past year as follows :— Rkl'okt Hamilton Wkst .School ComMiTTKK, Apkii, 23rd, 1888.—Your Committee beg to report that 18 meetings have been held during the past year, at which a large amount of business has been transacted, some of which embraced topics of more than ordinary interest. During the year the school has been well conducted and kept in a clean, orderly manner. The regular attendance of pupils has not been all that your committee could wish, and trust that drawing the attention of parents to this matter now will tend to have a good effect in this direction. The school buildings have been examined and attended to during the year, and are now in a failstate of repair. We have to congratulate parents on the good results of last standard examination, when more than the usual number of passes were obtained, and trust that this fact will be an impetus to parents to send their children regularly to school, and in good time. The balance-sheet, which shows a credit balance of £8 1-'! J , compares favourably with those of former years, although every requisite needed for school purposes was supplied by the committee. Altogether your committee have to congratulate you on the present state of the schpol, notwithstanding that the .severe depression and bad times have siightly militated against it as fat as number of children in attendance at present, the average being somewhat lower than usual, finally, your committee would request that it be an instruction from this meeting to the incoming committee that they vyuulll during

their term nf olliee grapple with th-; question of country sellouts and endowments, and (In their utmost to have those endowments made common to both town and country. Balance-Sheet. —Statement of accounts since January Ist, 1888, to April 23rd. Debtor : March loth, to Mayes and Wilson, £2 14a ; April sth, to Mayes and Wilson, £17s; April 19th <1. 8. The number proposed exceeding the number required, a ballot was taken, resulting in the following being declared duly elected Cox, OS ; Scott, (58 ; Knox, 55; Edgecumbe, 35; Hume, 35 ; T. U. Sandes, 24 ; R. I''- Sandes, 15. The Chairman then read a report of the headmaster, Mr Murray, which had been sent to the late committee in reference to matters of interest to out district schools, &c., &c., as follows: — Report for Year Ended 31st March, 1888.— I have to report that although a number of removals have occurred during the year, the attendance has not diminished to any serious extent. The results of the standard examination were quite up to those of previous years, but parents should remember that good results can be obtained only by regular attendance. I b<?g to call attention to" the disabilities under which country schools are placed by the present scholarship regulations. About eighteen mouths ago the Hamilton West Committee protested against these regulations without material result. About three months ago the Kaukapakaka teacher and committee sent a similar protest to the Board, and pointed out that at present, country school children are practically shut out from any chance of participating in those endowments which were originally set apart foi the benefit of the country as well as for the town children.—J. M. Murray, Head Toacher. The Chairman Hamilton West School Committee. A vote of thanks to the chairman concluded the proceedings. COMMITTEE MEETING. At a meeting of the newly-appointed committee, held immediately after the conclusion of tho householders meeting, Mr fx. Edgecumbe was voted to the chair, who pointed out that the first business of the committee was the appointment of their chairman. Mr J. Knox then proposed Mr J. Hume as chairman, this was duly seconded and carried unanimously. Mr N. R. Cox proposed Mr Knox as secretary, seconded by Mr R. F. Sandes, and carried unanimously.
