Hamilton East.
About 20 householders met in tho Hamilton E ist School-room last night to hear the annual report of the out-going committee and elect, tho new one for the ensuing year. Mr .7. W. Smith was appointed to take the chair. The minutes of the last annual meeting were read and confirmed. Mr Searancke, chairman of the committee, read the following report " The Committee have much pleasure in reporting that tho school has maintained its efficiency and average attendance during tho last twelve months, the average attendance being about 142 children, a number that might be considerably increased if parents and others in charge of children would exorcise a stricter supervision in seeing that their children attended more regularly. And here we must remind you that the attendance at school is now calculated on the strict, and not as formerly, on the general average, and we should also inform you that on this strict average by a new regulation of tho Education Board, not only the number of teachers are regulated but also the head teacher's salary, making it now essentially necessary that for the maintenance of efficiency in onr school that all children should as far as possible be compelled by their parents and guardian to attend regularly. There has been during to the past twelve months one change only in the pupil teachers, Miss Murray being removed and Miss Davis taking her place. Miss Biggs has been promoted to be an assistant teacher, and as by the new regulations, the school is entitled to only one assistant teacher and two pupil teachers, Miss Scott's connection with the school as a pupil teacher will cease on June 30th. The school-house has bsen painted, and now presents a most respectable appearance, and the interior has been kept clean by an efficient charwoman. In reference to finance, your committee expended during tho financial year ending December 31st., 1.587. the sum of £21 5s for cleaning the school, £■"> towards the painting, the Education Board giving in a most liberal spirit the balance of £15, and a farther sum of Eis t)s for repairs and necessaries, fuel, etc., leaving a balance of £3 14s 7d out of the sum of £30 allowed us by the Education Board for necessary expense for the last year. This year the Education Board in the spirit of retrenchment, has allowed the committee for expenses the sum of ,£23 only ; it will therefore behove the ensuing committee to exorcise the most judicious economy. In conclusion your committee wish to state their full approval of the efficient manner in which the school has been conducted during the last twelve months by the head teacher, Mr Stevens, and his staff of assistants." Mr Bright moved, and Mr Coates seconded the adoption of the report. Carried. The meeting then proceeded to the election of the new committee, and the following having received the highest number of votes, were declared duly elected, viz.:— Steadman, 42; Day, 17; Coates, 13; Gaudin, 12; Bell, i 0; White, 10; Searanclce, 9.
