S Kakly yesterday morning the usually i quiet little township of Ngaruawahia ; was on foot everybody rushing, hither and i thither, to find means to get to the races which were to be held on a course about two miles out from the township. Sion after eleven o'clock the people began to -, arrive on the course and kept , coming in until, at the time of the first I race, tiiere must have been between 400 > and 500 people present, including a large I number of Maoris, who seemed to take a , great interest in the races. As Major ; Jackson was not able to be present, i his position as judge was ably filled ! by Mr S. Young, and the indefatigable i Mr Jenkins worked unceasingly to : make the meeting a success. Mr Arnnboldi, of Cambridge, had his totalis*tor on the ground, and during the day it was well patronised. Mr E. L Smith, of the Royal Hotel, Hamilton, furnished comforts for the inner man, and seemed to be doing a good business. The results of the various races were as follows : — IfA.vnicAi' Hukdlk Rack, of lOsovs; second horse save his stakes. Over six flights of hurdles. Distance, about 1J miles. Mr C. Weal's Kotiro ... ... .. 1 Mr Halcrow's Te Namo 2 Mr Simon's Jack ... .. ... 3 Seven started. The horses got off to a good start, and Arititaha at once took the lead, but he ran off at the third hurdle, and Bob Sawyer took the lead, Kotiro being well up hard held. At the turn coining into the straight, Kotiro took the load and won hard held, Te Namo being second, and Jack well up third. Hickcy who rode Marksman, collided with one of the posts and was thrown but not hurt. Dividend, £1 13s. Maiden Platk, of lOsovs. Distance, about 1| miles. Mr Halcrow's Clarion 1 Mr J. O'Connor's Liberator ... ... 2 Sixteen started. After a long delay and a couple of false starts, Mr Kay managed to get the large field away well together, and Maungatautari took the lead till coming round the first corner, when he ran oIF and then Pamell, who was running strong, took first place, which he held till just coming into the straight, where he ran inside a post, and was put out of the race. A grand race ensued up the straight, Clarion winning by about a neck. Dividend £1 12s. Ngakoawahia Handicap, of 2.jsovs. Ten per cent, of stake to go to second horse. Distance, lip miles. Mr M. Halcrow's Snake 1 MrC. Weal's Haricot 2 Mr Wilson's Forest King 3 Five horses started. On the fall of the flag Forest King went off with the lead closely followed by Haricot and Snake in the order named. Passinc; the post for the first time Haricot had taken the lead with Snake close up. This order wa« kept until the straight was entered when Snake crept up and after a splendid race managed to win by a bead from Haricot, Forest King being third. Dividend Ills. Sei.ltno Hack Rack, of Ssovs. Winner to be sold for Ssovs., surplus to go to funds. Distance, about 1 mile. Mr Puke's Maungatautari ... ... 1 Mr J. O'Connor's Diana ... ... 2 Mr A. Williamson'sStaymaker ... 3 Five horses started, Maungatautari went off with tho lead at the start, and was nerer caught, winning hard held. There were no investors on the winner on thetotalisator, and the money was handed back less 20 per cent. The winner was void for £9. Noaiujawaiiia Plate, of 12sovs ; second horse to save his stakes. Distance, about li miles. MrC. Weal's Haricot 1 Mr M. Halcrow's Snake 2 Mr E. Cussen's Parnell ... ... 3 Six horses started. Haricot took the lead at the start, closely followed by Snake and Parnell, and this order was kept all round. On entering the straight Snake closed up, but was not able to overhaul Haricot, who passed the post about a length ahead. Dividend, 17s 6d.
