School Cojimitthe.— The ordinary meeting »f the school committee was hold on Tuesday evening. Present: Rev. J. Marshall, M.A. (chairman), Messrs Mills, Farrell, Gallagher and Dobson. As shown by the report of Mr Marsden, head teacher, there was a marked increase in the number of pupils attending since the previous month. A number of school requisites were stated to be necessary, and it was resolved that Mr Marsden be authorised to procure them. Mr Mills drew attention to the circumstance that as there was no Hrebell in the town, tho school bell might be used for that purpose. He suggested that the rope should be lengthened so that it could bo conveniently reached on the outside and readily rung in cases of fire. The suggestion was approved of, and the required alteration sanctioned. Messrs Gallaghar and Mills were appointed visiting members of tho committee for the month. An account for school cleaning was passod for payment and concluded the business. Although announced as a lecture it was not so, in a strict sense, being more of a narrative of scenes and events, and amusing incidents on board one of her H. The narrator gave an excellent description of life in a man-o'-war, and depicted many of his own experiences in such a manner as to keep his audience interested and amused from beginning to end. Mr F. Pavitt occupied the chair, and at the close thanked Mr Stratford on behalf of the Library Committee for the aid ha had rendered to the institutiou. Songs were contributed during the evening by Miss V. Pavit and Master H, Tonga, who, with his brothor Fred, also aetod as bos'un's mates during the lecture, and daneed tha sailor's hornpipe in capital style.
