It is understood that on aud after Ist April next the experiment is to be tried of making the various post offices throughout the colony the medium of cashing Government cheques for contingencies, salaries, &c., in connection with the Government service. It is thought that this will expedite the payment, anil also obviate a considerable amount of trouble to which holders of Government cheques arc now put to by either ha>'iug to pass them through accounts, or present them at a branch of the Bank of New Zealand. The amount of saving effected in the Defence Department by the retrenchment recently made will amount to close on £10,000.
