THE NEW ZEALAND BAT.

TO THE KDITOIt. Sin,— Riding fromKihikihi toTe Awamutu to-night about 7 o'clock I observed what I have never seen in the Waikato before, viz. a bat. Can any of your readers inform me whether they are common in the district ? What is likely to bo the name of the species I observed? And where and for how many months do they hyberoate ? It is reassuring among so many insect pests to observe the busy bat playing such havoc in its aerial flight. The ""mouse with wings" is deserving of our fostering care. Pekapeka. Te Awamutu, February 18th.
