DESTRUCTIVE FIRE AT DEVONPORT.
A very extensive and destructive fire broke out in Victoria-street, North Shore, on Sunday morning at about four o'clock. The lire first began in the premises of Mr John Patterson, part of which was occupied by a barber and tobacconist, and very quickly spread along the street, which is the. principal business locality in Devonport. Nino houses and shops were destroyed. There is no water supply or fire brigade at this populous suburb though the question of providing them has been agitating the people of the borough for some time, without any definite action being decided upon. This disaster will probably influence them in coining to a speedy conclusion in the matter. |UY TEI.EIIRAI'H—OWN COURESI'OXDKNT.] Auckland, Monday.
