OHINEMUR I.
County Hlections!.— Since my last the comity elections have eventuated, and thirteen candidates are sadder and wiser men. The election on tha whole is very satisfactory, there being no doubt that the better men have been returned. For I’aeroa Messrs W. G. Nicholls, Charles Dearie, and .f. M. 'Robson headed the poll. Mr Nicholls is an old and tried councillor, and will probably be elected chairman. Mr Dearie is an old Government servant, having been in the Native Department finyears, and is well up in the political game l.f chess, Mr J. M. Robson is a storekeeper, q yen; old resident, and will make a gond councillor. For Iparan gab ake Messrs K. Quinn and Carroll Nash were returned. Mr Quinn is the Chairman of the Te Aroha Town Hoard and a highly respected resident of both Ohinenmri and To Aroha. Ku passant, I may remark that a scarcely warranted attack was made upon Air Quinn in last Saturday’s issue of the Aroha News in which it was stated that Mr Quinn was desirous of the chairmanship of the Ohiiu.'inuri County Council and had determined to occupy that position. Mr Qninn ivas actually requested to become a candidate (of the chair in the interests of the gnldliftld's riding which he represents, but he Hotly declined saying that ho had neither the time, nor the inclination for the position. The action of the News has been rather adversely criticised. Mr Nash the second Karangahako member is the wellknown Mackaytown hotelkeeper. Messrs Moore and Cm belt the re-elected members for Waitoknnri are well-known mining men, the former boiljg njaqagcr of the Maritoto claim at Hikutain. Ohinkmori Railway Contract.—Mr Thomas Mnlvihill, the successful tenderer for the Ohinenmri Railway Contract, was in I’aeroa during the week, and will make a start immediately. Confirmation Services.— The Right Rev, Dr. Cowio, Bishop of Auckland, he’d a confirmation service at j’aerqa pn Monday evening last. A large number of candidates wore confirmed. New Library.— I The new library building was opened last Saturday. It is a comfortable little building, and has every facility for a reading-room, which, it is hoped, will be opened as soon as funds are available for a caretaker.
Tub >la;,;^qti}M;ni;.—The first tenders for ant first English fining Company, the Mammoth, are called ft)f in tipi shape of Mining timber. Mr Littlejohn will probably supervise the mine until Mr McCandlisll coir.es out I rum Hums, Ife - c f t Tf>i|don mi the f7th Inst. County Thamway. —The County Tramwav, (No. 2 section) to Hailey Battery, is now completed, and was handed over to the Comity by the contractor, last week. Every part was carefully inspeiaed ami passed by Mr Pnvitt, County Engineer, hod for t-go, Wilson, Miring Inspector. The tramway is altogether 17 chains long, 12 on the incline, with a grade of one in two, and five on the flat. It has three rails, with passing loop in the centre. ' The level i,;;-ifon has two rails, and connects with The 'Crown min’. The rails are

The rope used <>n the incline is of black H ;s.s(‘ini;r steel, „in, diameter, worked by a jfi. din. brake wheel. Tin* work tins been very well done, and reflects proat credit on the contractors, Messrs Huslett mid Mcndeth.
