[bv telegraph.—own correspondent.] Diocesan Synod.

Auckland, Wednesday Night. The Anglican Diocesan Synod opened today. In his address. Bishop Cowie reviewed the growth of the Church during his eighteen years’ administration of the diocese. He said that in that period the number of licensed clergy ministering to the European population has increased from 19 to 44, the layreaders from 14 to 54, and Ma-ri clergymen from sto 11. Since 1870 there have been SO new churches built, and nine others have been enlarged. As showing the increased results flowing from the extension of church organisations, it may be mentioned that whereas in 1870 the number of Europeans confirmed was 101, the number last year was 513. This year makes the centenary of the episcopate on the colonies, the first bishop ever ordained to a British colony being the Bishop of Nova Scotia, whi) was consecrated at Lambeth Palace, on the 12th August, 1787, and a vivid proof of the growth of the colonies is afforded by the fact that seventy-five colonial bishops have been invited to meet next year at Lambeth Palace to take part in a church conference, for which purpose he also visits England.
