TE AROHA.
Tut; Timk-taim.k : Gnsatiskaitohv Map. Ahuaniiements.— Perhaps the most serious of the disadvantages to which the new railway timetable has given rise in this district—l he distui banco of our postal arrangements—is now about to be experienced, as from yesterday Te Aroha will only have tri weekly communication with Auckland and all intermediate places on the line of railway. This inconvenience has not hitherto been felt, because on the off-train days the mails, both outward and inward, have been conveyed gratuitously by Mr E. Gallagher in his coach which runs regularly to and from Morrinsville, and connects with the train on these days. It could not be expected, however, that Mr Gallager would perform this work for any length of time without some remuneration, and an offer to continue tlie service for a small subsidy was recently submitted by him to the postoffice authorities. The amount asked for was a guinea per week, being at the rate of three shillings and sixpence a mail, and considering the great increase in Hie weight nf bags to be carried since the introduction of the parcel post, this charge is surely moderate enough. But it does not seem to be so regarded by those who have control in these matters, for the offer lias been rejected, and the result is that, so far as postal communication is concerned, the whole district is thrown back to tlie state of things that existed years ago when our mails had to bo conveyed to and from Hamilton by coach. This cannot now be tolerated for any length of time. A public meeting is to bo held to-night to consider subjects of local importance, and steps will doubtless then be taken to havo this grievance redressed without delay.
THE LATEST. [itY TELEGRAPH, —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] A communication was received this evening from the Public Works Minister by the chairman of the late meeting, re alteration in railway time-table. There is no chance of a daily train being restored on the To Aroha branch until the lino shows an increase in traffic.
