ENTERTAINMENT AT ALEXANDRA
The concert and dramatic entertainment, in aid of the fends of S. Saviour’s Church, took place in the Public Hall, Alexandra, on Friday evening last, and, considering the weather, it being bitterly cold and the bad state of the roads, was fairly attended, Mrs John Aubin, Mr Collier, and others had worked energetically to make the affair a success, and no disappointment occurred on this score, as all present passed a pleasant evening’s amusement. The Rev. Mr Boler filled the chair in a most agreeable manner, and the overture (piano) which opened the concert played by Mrs Helps was a most masterly performance. A glee by the company “0 by river’s.” This was must heartily applauded. A song, “Golden shore,” by Miss Fincb, received rounds of applause. Duet, “ Home to the mountains,” by Misses Allan and Etcelc, was also most favourably received. Song, “ blind girl to her harp,” by Miss R. Allan, was sweetly rendered. Song, “ Home they brought her warrior dead,” by Miss Ireland, was one of the gems of the evening. Duet, violin and piano, by Mr T. Goodfellow and Mrs Helps was a most meritorious performance, and the audience would fain have had more of it. Song, “Someday,” by Miss Steele was nicely anng. Another duet on the violin and piano by the previous performers, “The Wedding March,” etc,, concluded the musical part of the evening’s amusement ’midst rounds of cheers and applause. After the usual interval to allow fur arranging the stage and for the audience to get a “ clove,” the curtain rose to the farce of “My Wife’s Second Floor,” with the following caste: — Mrs Tophcavy, Miss R. Allen; Mrs Downey, Miss Harper; Fanny Maylove, Miss J. Finch ; Mr Topheavy, Mr C. Tisda.ll; Foddles, Mr S. Collier; Jacob, Mr J. Collier; Tim, (a porter), Mr E. Aubin ; The piece was throughout most mirth provoking and kept the audience in roars of laughter. The actors acquitting themselves most admirably in their respective parts to particularise would he invidious were all did so well. The applause at its conclusion was unanimous. This concluded the entertainment and a most enjoyable dance followed to most excellent music kindly contributed by Mr J. Goodfellow, Mrs Helps, Mrs Aubin and other ladies.
