In Mr Macdonald’s time the expenses of the Auckland railway's head office were a little over £IOOO, he being head both of the traffic and of the locomotive departments. Now these are in separate hands, causing endless friction, envy, malice, nncharitableness, and swearing., The cost is now about £2-120, divided amongst fourteen officials Students of railway economy would also like to know how much the duplex action of the Public Works and the Railway Engineering department costs the country in shifting of stations, sidings etc.
