STATE-AIDED COLONISATION.
(reuter’s telegrams.) Received August 10th. 11.15 p.m. London, August 9. The statement made by the Right Honourable AV. H. Smith in the House of Commons yesterday regarding the question of state - aided emigration, should have been reported as follows:—“ The Imperial Government was unable to guarantee advances to settlers, and doubted whether the Colonial Government would approve of such an arrangement. It would be useless to invite the latter to co-operate since the Imperial Government were unable to propose to the Parliament a scheme for a guarantee."
