FAVOURABLE REPORTS. [BY TELEGRAPH-COPYRIGHT.] [reuter’s telegrams.] (Received August Ist. 12 50 p.m.) COOKTOWN, August 1. News to hand from New Guinea states that the exploring party, despatched by the special commissioner, Mr Douglas, have returned to Port Moresby. They reached the top main range between Mount Obree and Mount Brown. They report that a magnificent country exists on the other side. The natives along the coast wore quiet. The Catholic missionaries in Yule Island are making good progress. The land discovered near the new river is exceedingly fertile. The country is thickly populated, some villages being of great size.
