LATEST WELLINGTON NEWS.

(by TELEGRAPH.— PRESS ASSOCIATION - ). Wellington, Monday. The Hon. E. Richardson left fur the south to-day. The cutter Thermopyhe, which was mentioned last week, turned up all right at Port Underwood, and left again last Monday for Wellington, and arrived otf the heads on Tuesday, but as it was blowing hard from the N.W. she went into Palliser Ray for shelter, and early on Wednesday dragged her anchor and went ashore, and became a total wreck. The crew reached here in safety. Pirst-class Constable Stagpoole, who endeavoured to save the lives at Tologa Ray of persons who were upset from a boat belonging to the steamer Australia, has been promoted to the rank of third-class sergeant in recognition of the bravery shown on that occasion. The proposal to organise a company to purchase the Xew Zealand Times and Press and amalgamate them has fallen through. Political news is absolutely nil. The weather has killed all interest in business and politics. The cabmen speak feelingly on the state of trade, and the Times this morning rebukes the electors upon their scandalous apathy in political matters. The Government are spending no money, possibly because they have none to spend. Government matters are virtually at a standstill all over the colony.
